Big Changes for ATP Schedule in 2025

Cincinnati and Canada Become 12-Day Events

There are big changes in store for the ATP Tour in 2025, including the growth of two storied North American tournaments.

The calendar revealed today is meticulously crafted to elevate the tournament experience for players and fans alike, with the ATP embarking on ambitious enhancements across its event categories.

In an exciting development for the tennis community, the ATP has announced the expansion of two of its crown jewels, the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers and the Cincinnati Open, to 12-day events in 2025. This strategic move brings the total to seven out of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events adopting the extended format, following the expansion of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, Mutua Madrid Open, and Rolex Shanghai Masters in 2023. Such an expansion not only offers more comprehensive coverage and engagement opportunities for fans but also provides players with a more favorable schedule to showcase their skills.

Moreover, the ATP Tour will feature a total of 60 tournaments across 29 countries, with an increase in the ATP 500 events from 13 in 2024 to 16 in 2025. The upgrades of the Dallas Open, Qatar ExxonMobil Open (Doha), and BMW Open (Munich) to ATP 500 status underscore the ATP's commitment to enhancing the quality and prestige of its tournaments. The creation of additional weeks featuring side-by-side ATP 500 events aims to spotlight this crucial category, fostering a more consolidated and engaging narrative for the global tennis audience.

Highlighting the calendar are the blockbuster season-ending events: the fifth edition of the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, the third edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF in Jeddah, and the Davis Cup Finals. These marquee events cap off the season with high-stakes competition and showcase the sport's future stars and national team pride, respectively.

ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi emphasizes the vision behind these changes, stating, "Next season will see yet more enhancements to the ATP Tour’s premium product across a streamlined calendar. This is central to everything we’ve been building under OneVision, which ultimately aims to create the best possible experience for our fans." The ATP's efforts have already borne fruit, with a record five million fans attending events on-site last season, signaling the sport's positive trajectory and untapped potential.

Among other notable changes, the 2025 calendar introduces the rescheduling of the Hamburg Open (ATP 500) from July to May, the relocation of the Cordoba Open (ATP 250) event to Mallorca in the lead-up to Wimbledon, and the rescheduling of the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo (Los Cabos, ATP 250) from February to July. These adjustments reflect the ATP's agility in optimizing the tour schedule for competitive balance, player wellness, and fan engagement.

However, the exclusion of the Estoril tournament, which has operated under an ATP license since 2015 but does not hold an ATP membership, highlights the complexities of calendar planning. The ATP's ongoing discussions with the Estoril event organizers underscore a commitment to collaboration and finding solutions that benefit the sport and its stakeholders.
